Aidan's Birthday

I have been a terrible blogger lately. Not just out of being busy, but also because it wasn't nearly as much fun to blog without really cool pictures. Well, that situation has been temporarily resolved. Not only had I done something to the good camera, then my cruddy camera bit the dust as well. I have a new camera coming for Christmas, but in the meantime Dad has loaned me a camera he's not currently using. Yay, upgrade! Now I'm not embarrassed to post pictures on the blog.

Aidan's birthday arrived right in the middle of this week - Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Our Elf on the Shelf, Christopher, also arrived this week, along with a birthday card for Aidan from Santa.

I like to describe Aidan as a constant surprise. He was a 'surprise' baby, he was born about two weeks early, and when he was three weeks old, he surprised us with a virus that landed him at Kosair for three days.

Even now, at a grown-up seven, he continues surprising us. There is no predicting what will come out of his mouth. Even after ten years of teaching, I can say with much honesty that he is one of the most intelligent children I have ever met. Not just book smart, although he is that, but a huge vocabulary, an adult maturity that he hasn't learned to filter, and the uncanny ability to do just about anything on the first try. He can take things apart and reassemble them with no directions. He has basically taught himself to play the piano, and his favorite game is chess. He is an absolutely amazing kid - if only we could get him to learn to filter his thoughts so he didn't get in trouble at school! His birthday gifts included a fish tank, a chess set, and 20 questions game, and a gift certificate to a book store. For his birthday dinner at home, he wanted ham and stuffing and a giant cupcake. That was easy. The Sunday before his birthday, we did a small party with the family. He wanted to open gifts first.
True to form, Aidan surprised me with his choice of cake. I assumed he wanted me to use the giant big top cupcake pan that he picked out for Christmas last year. Instead, about four hours before everyone arrived he told me wanted a tiered cake. Well, I did my best. It was pretty ugly but it tasted great!

Happy seventh birthday to our Aidanbug! I know we are in for many more surprises with you - may they be more good than bad!
