June Wrap-Up

June ended up as a pretty great month, all-in-all, even if I got behind in my blogging.  We had Cub Scout camp, Girls' State, the boys' "space camp" at the Planetarium, vacation Bible school, and all kinds of other things.  Here are the pictures I feel obligated to share before we get too far into July!

Of course, the last Saturday of Girls' State is Honor Day.  Since it's our last day together, we tend to clean up pretty well and smile nicely.  My "oldest" HGS friend is Julie.  We've taken a similar picture for almost 15 years now.

Words can not even begin to express how much I love my HGS friends and how much we miss those who can't be with us (Meredith - Megan E. - this means you!!!)
The Clark County girls have taken an honor day picture together for many a year as well.  Unfortunately, this year Monica fell off a curb on Friday and strained a ligament.  Thus, she spent Honor Day in a wheel chair.  Makes for a good story, but maybe not a good time.
I left for HGS feeling pretty excited to have another baseball season behind us.  I returned to find that Andrew had been selected for the nine and under Minors All-Star team.  Despite the hassle, I was very proud of him.  The All-Stars only play one tournament against the other local teams, and it's double elimination.  Andrew's team lost both of their games, but he played well and even scored his team's only run in the first game.

One day last week before the unbearable heat hit, I took the kids to the park.  We spent some time on the playground, but we spent the most time in the old ampitheatre in the woods.  The kids thought it was amazing to have a stage and audience all to themselves and proceeded to put on all kinds of concerts and plays.

Every so often, our friend Fr. Paul will come up with a reason to cook a truly gluttonous meal for his friends.  This past Friday, we were invited over to celebrate several things:  Fr. Paul's assignment at St. Martin's, Tony and my 10th wedding anniversary, and the one year anniversary of the ordination of Fr. Hardesty.  Six of us enjoyed quite a spread - this was the picture Paul sent us before we arrived:
The menu was smoked salmon rolls with crackers and various cheeses, a spring salad, lamb chops, beef filets, red wine and chocolate cake.  Coupled with cigars for the guys and good conversation, it was a great evening.

When we finished dinner, we had to go pick the kiddos up from their last night at VBS.  Aidan skipped out on the performance to go to a friend's birthday party, but Andrew and Sophie were great in the performance!

We have a truly dynamic, wonderful VBS program and the kids had a blast all week.

It has been HOT here - think over 100 for the past week with no end in the immediate future.  It's that type of heat where not only is it not fun to be outside, it's not really safe.  We finally broke down and took the kids to the pool yesterday.  As we were leaving, we saw this from afar:

Our local recycling center is on fire.  I say "is" because apparently it's still burning.  They're trying to keep it contained as best they can, but it's one massive fire.  This is what happens when you skip a nap, go swimming, and then go fire chasing all in one afternoon:
Today was a lazy Sunday.  After we went to Mass as a family, Tony and Andrew headed over to St. Martin's.  Andrew has been waiting impatiently to learn how to serve the Tridentine (Latin) Mass since he made his first Communion.  I was imagining he and Tony attending Masses together this summer and observing to learn.  Tony was thinking that he'd dress Andrew and let him carry a candle and then sit in the front pew.  What happened wasn't really either.  Apparently Andrew got a true lesson in hands-on learning.  He got thrown in and was told to just follow Joe.  Thank goodness Joe had the presence of mind to take a couple of pictures for me.  I wasn't really expecting to miss his first serving experience!

What a grown up boy he is becoming!  Now he just needs to work on his Latin so he can respond properly.  And maybe next time this proud momma can be there too!
