Sophie's First Day

Sophie got her chance at a "first day" today.  She woke up and the first thing she said was, "No more sleeps?", because we've been counting the number of nights left until school.  She had to have her picture by the organ, just like the boys.  If I weren't so stinking tired, I'd find the first day preschool pictures of the boys as well for comparison.  Unfortunately, if you want to see those pictures you're going to have to search the blog archives because I am worn out.

How about a first and second day of school picture?  This is about how we go out the door in the morning...notice Andrew's ziploc baggie with breakfast in his hand.
I would like to point out several rare occurrences in the picture below:  1)  I am wearing a skirt and heels for the 2nd day in a row  2) My hair is both completely dried and styled  and (although you can't see it) 3) I have already eaten breakfast and made coffee.
This two-day streak is historic.  I've never accomplished all those things in two or more consecutive school days since before I had Andrew.  I wish I were exaggerating.  Generally when I leave the house I'm in pants and flats, my hair is damp if not wet, and I eat breakfast at my desk and get my coffee from the teacher's lounge.  New year, new goals.  We'll see how long it lasts...I'll be surprised if I make it past tomorrow.

I left right after recess to go get Sophie and bring her to her first day of preschool.  Normally, our awesome babysitter is going to bring her but I wanted to take pictures and see her off.  Here's her picture in front of the "apple school".  Exchange the word "preschool" for "kindergarten" on the apple, and this could be a picture of me in the exact same spot about 28 years ago.

One of my very best friends and colleague has a granddaughter in Sophie's class.  The girls sort of know each other since their big siblings have been in school together since preschool as well.  I think they were glad to see each other.
We are so blessed to have an amazing preschool teacher.  She and I have been waiting for Sophie to get to her class for a long three years!
So after this picture, Mrs. Steuer went to unlock the door.  While she was trying to get her keys out of the lock, Sophie just walked right in.  No backward glance, not even a wave or "good bye".  Would it be too much to ask that just one of my children had a little separation anxiety?  Not one of them has ever shown the first little bit of concern.  I'm glad they are so comfortable and happy at school, but it might be nice to be missed.  I had to call Sophie back to give me a hug.

I think she's off to a great start!
