Snowy Day

Today was a snowy day but (thankfully, hooray) not a SNOW day for St. Anthony. We were under a winter storm warning and knew the snow was on its way, so the boys excitedly sat their boots out. When we awoke this morning - nothing. I was in the shower when Tony started telling me about school closings. It was supposed to snow all day long, and the local schools were starting to call off. For those of our friends up north, go ahead and laugh at us. Yes, school corporations in Southern Indiana actually call school for the prediction of snow. By the time the boys and I left for school about an hour later, however, the road was covered. When I got to the parking lot school with Andrew about 6:40 this morning, here was the scene:
Kinda makes you want to go rolling in it, doesn't it? This was the view from outside my classroom window around noon time. The snow came down steadily all day, sometimes extremely heavily. It was gorgeous. I was as bad as my kiddos about wanting to just stand and watch it.Andrew and I picked up Sophie and Aidan and then headed to Walgreens for diapers. You'd think someone who grew up in the knobs would know better than to run out of something in the snow. The problem was not so much driving - we're close to everything, even though the roads were pretty nasty. No, the big issue was three kids in coats and boots in and out of a snow and ice covered parking lot. But, Sophie was down to four diapers, so off we went. This is a picture of our street when we arrived home. No plow has touched it, as you can tell. You can't even see the pavement.
The grand total here in Clarksville was about 2 1/2 inches. Doesn't sound like much, but it's totally fluffy and it's below zero and windy outside. The snow is blowing and drifting, and it's darn cold. However, the kids wanted to go out, and truthfully so did I. I had been itching to go out all day and even went out for car duty voluntarily. I had even checked the ski reports from Paoli. The minute we hit the door, the boys and I changed clothes. Then I went to work on Sophie. Andrew had a snow suit when he was her size, but I can't figure out what happened to it. So Sophie got layers. I was pretty proud of my ingenuity. I put her sleeper over a long sleeve onsie, then a pair of her pants followed by a pair of Aidan's pants and her coat and toboggan.
When we were all dressed, we headed outside. I took the dog out to the dog run first so she could play after being in the house all day. She loved the snow and about took my arm off trying to run in it. Then I came back in for Sophie. She loved the snow at first. She laughed, talked, and yelled at the dog. Then she realized she couldn't move with all the layers on and started crying.
Aidan cleared all the snow off the playhouse (which is still roofless).
My three angels:
The happy looks are real on the boys. Sophie, although you can't see it, is screaming and crying. As soon as I took this picture, I took her inside.
It's a rare night that we are home during the school year with nothing to do and nowhere to go. I made hot chocolate and Aidan helped me make homemade m&m cookies. The new stove with a window in the door is a novelty, and Sophie figured out that there were cookies in the oven after about two minutes.
She was so cute! She'd look at the cookies, and then look and me and start chomping with her mouth and saying "mmm". Here's the video:

I was so glad that we were the only school around that didn't take the day off. We don't have buses, so the considerations are different than the public schools. At any rate, I only had three students out and now we don't have to make up the day. We'll see what tomorrow brings - hopefully a delayed opening and not a day off. Our next makeup day is Martin Luther King day and I'm really looking forward to my three day weekend!

Stay warm!
