Celebration Weekend

Both our 8th anniversary and Tony's birthday were earlier last week, but we didn't go out to celebrate until this weekend - which we've had planned for awhile. When I was at Girls' State, it was mentioned that Indianapolis hosts a Microbrew Festival in July. We tossed around the idea of meeting up, and when I talked it over with Tony he decided that he'd like to go as part of his birthday gift. So, a few facebook messages later, we were set to go.

Our original plan was to head to Indy early on Friday, but Sophie got sick and I had to take her to the doctor in the morning. She had the beginnings of croup. Luckily, our pediatrician gave us a one-time steriod dose to help the swelling, and mom said she would keep her overnight, cough and all. We got out of town a little later than planned, but it was fine in the end.

Tony graciously let me plan our Friday evening, since Saturday was his day. My first stop was the outlet mall on the way up I-65. We arrived at our hotel, unpacked the car and headed to the manager's reception for free snacks and drinks since we were eating a late dinner and we never pass up free drinks. Then we went a spent a couple hours at the Circle Center Mall. We dropped our purchases back in our room (the mall is attached to multiple hotels) and went to dinner, which was also connected. I love downtown Indy! Tony's suggestion was to try out the Weber Grill restaraunt. I rarely doubt Tony's opinion when it comes to food, and I was glad I didn't. I had a phenomenal prime rib, cooked over a Weber grill indoors.

After a call home to check on Sophie, we meandered around downtown and headed back to our hotel room. The plan was to get dessert from room service, but the prices were outrageous. Reminding ourselves that it was relatively early and we had no children to worry about, we ventured back out around ten to find dessert. Tony's suggestion this time was the South Bend Chocolate Company, right on the circle. This is scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream, covered in hot fudge, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and several mint truffles. After our steaks, however, I am sad to say that we couldn't finish it, even sharing.

We finally headed back to the hotel for the night. On Saturday morning, we slept later than usual and enjoyed breakfast in our hotel. We weren't meeting anyone until around one, so we stopped at the President Benjamin Harrison home. Neither Tony nor I had ever toured it, so it was a nice side trip. It is a beautiful home, and we had a private tour with an extremely knowledgable guide.

We weren't allowed a flash, so my pictures didn't really turn out. This is a piano that President and Mrs. Harrison's son gave Mrs. Harrison one Christmas in the White House.
After our tour, we stopped by to pick up our friend Dave, and then headed to my friend Stephanie's house. After visiting a few minutes, we all headed to the park for the Microbrew Festival. Tony, Dave and I drove, thinking we'd be leaving straight from the park. Everyone else walked and we met up there. Here I am with my HGS girls before we entered the park.

Tony is ready to conquer all 200 beer samples.
After we tackled one side of the park, we stopped to eat lunch. There were several booths set up by restaraunts on Broad Ripple. I had some wonderful barbeque, but I don't really know where it came from.

The next picture was taken right before we left. It is more obvious here that I was the designated driver, seeing as how I don't like beer. Everyone else is way happier and less oblivious to the awful heat than me at this point. I can't complain, however, because my ticket was a lot cheaper, and I got free soft drinks and bottled water. I'm not really sure why Tony ended up in this picture, since we also had Dave with us, and Angie's boyfriend and they aren't in the picture.
We left about an hour before the event ended and headed down the street to eat at a little Mexican place. The food was excellent, and it was nice to cool off a little before the drive home. The temperature had to be well into the 90s, with minimal shade although there was a nice breeze.

Tony and I headed home right after dinner. We did fine until about 30 miles out, and then ran into one of the worst lightning storms I have ever seen. We switched drivers, and Tony got us through the torrential rain safely. We had a wonderful weekend!
