Summer Saturday...again

This was officially, by the calendar, the last weekend of summer. Fall begins Thursday, but you'd never know it by the temperatures around here. All this week it's still forecasted to be in the mid 90s. Hello, fall? Where are you?

Anyway, on this horrible hot final Saturday of summer, the town of Clarksville had their "Grand Opening" of the Eastern Boulevard project. Eastern Blvd runs right in front of our neightborhood, so Mom and I loaded the kids in the wagon and went walking. Tony, as a member of a town board, was asked to judge the business displays. We caught up to him as he was riding his golf cart around with the other judge.
Sophie was thrilled to have a balloon of her very own, and she scored a pink drawstring bag just by being cute.
Clarksville Flowers and Gifts were doing face painting - with a very talented painter.

After the festivities, I took the kiddos home to rest and started cooking. Saturday afternoon and evening was the St. Anthony Men's Club annual Pig Roast. I LOVE this event. One of our parishoners has a farm, and we gather for Mass outdoors, a huge pitch-in, and general socializing and fun. Members of the Men's Club head out early in the morning to get the pork going, and it's hard to sit through Mass with the smoke and pork smell wafting through the air. I made a yummy Paula Deen cauliflower dish and a fluffy jello salad. The food is always amazing, as you can tell from Andrew's intensity below:
Another highlight of the evening is the hay ride(s). Sophie didn't remember her first one last year. In fact, on the way out, Aidan said "This is Sophie's first pig roast". I reminded him that we came last year. He commented, "Well, it's the first one she could walk at." At any rate, she was not totally impressed with the ride, but afterwards she kept pointing and wanting to go again.

At the end of the evening, another parishoner who owns a fireworks store put on a show for us. It was, as always, quite impressive. We've been coming to the pig roast for probably five years now, and I enjoy it more each year. Many of the boys' friends from school were there and they were old enough to go run the farm and be dirty. Can't wait until Sophie gets to that point, so maybe I enjoy dinner and grown-up drinks without chasing the baby down!

The best part of the pig roast? No getting up for church on Sunday! We sweltered and watched the boys play football. Andrew and Aidan both had some good plays (or so I was told - I don't quite get flag football). Then we headed home, took Sunday afternoon naps, cleaned a little and watched the Colts play. So glad to have Tony home on the weekends again!
