Pinkalicious

So, "Pinkalicious" is an adorable children's book about a little girl that loves pink and eats so many cupcakes that she turns pink. I wish my story about my little Princess Pink was quite so cute.

Once upon a time, a little girl was playing with her doll house while her mommy talked on the phone and her brothers played the Wii. She came to her mommy with a red mouth, making a funny face and saying, "I bit it". Her mommy thought she bit her tongue, so they went running to the kitchen for ice. On the way, they found a puddle of nail polish in the middle of the floor.

That's right, in a matter of about five minutes, Sophie managed to get a bottle of nail polish off the cabinet, open it, and proceed to paint her toenails. When that didn't go so well (she told me, "my toes too wittle"), she decided to use the nail polish as lipstick. At which point, apparently, the nail polish went in her mouth (here, she told me, "I bit it"). I rinsed her mouth out as best I could and then we took off to the Urgent Care center. I knew she hadn't ingested very much at all, but I had no idea how harmful it could be to the inside of her mouth and her lips, and furthermore I didn't have the foggiest idea how to get it off her.

I alternated between wanting to cry, scream, and laugh all the way there. The boys were upset that I made them leave the house in their pjs. They were convinced someone would laugh at them. I told them I was pretty sure no one would even look at them. Sophie was scolding me from the backseat about leaving the house without her shoes on. When I told her we were going to the doctor because she was naughty and put the paint in her mouth, she said "I spit it out!". Here she is, not looking at all remorseful as we wait on the doctor.
Luckily, the doctor said the small amount she had in her mouth wouldn't be harmful, but there was a danger of dermatitis if we didn't get it off her skin. There was a LOT to get off. Here's where she painted her too small toes - check out the bottom of the other foot, too.
Actually, in retrospect, she didn't do too bad a paint job for two years old. Hmm...
And, here's her innovative use of nail polish as lipstick and hair color.
After a loooong soak in the bath and lots of scrubbing, everything came off her skin. Several strands of hair are still an interesting color, but she'll just have to be that way awhile. I'm so glad we were able to entertain the Urgent Care folks on an otherwise slow night. Great parenting fail on my part. Sigh. To make things worse, in the midst of the mess, the tooth fairy forgot Andrew's tooth. Some days you can't win. At least I'll never paint my nails again without smiling.
