Drying out and coming up for air

This weekend, the sun finally came out in Kentuckiana. Well, at least for Friday and Saturday. All this rain has been really good for my roses!
And for the peonies!

And, we even saw a rainbow between storms on Thursday night. This was actually a very vivid, beautiful double rainbow. This is all that was left by the time I took a picture:
We went back the the New Albany YMCA on Friday and then up and over the flood wall to check on the flooding. We had to wait for a train to pass. That was just fine with Aidan!
The water had receded a little by Friday - the Ohio was supposed to crest Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, we've had rain again since Sunday so this recession was only temporary.
Aunt Connie was in town this weekend and stayed with Mom and Dad. She got to see part of Sophie's dance class and watch the boys play a little baseball. It was actually a gorgeous, sunny day for a change!

Saturday evening Mom and Dad had a party to go to, so Tony, the kiddos and I took Aunt Connie to opening night at Churchill Downs. She had never been to the track before, and Aidan didn't remember our last trip. It was a pretty historic opening, because it's the first time opening day at the races has been held at night. Sophie and I couldn't go to the track without our hats!
The theme for the evening was Hollywood, so the kids walked the red carpet and hammed it up in front of the backdrop.
Thanks to Tony's press pass, we got to see some places the public doesn't have access to. This balcony, for example, has an amazing view.

Looking cool at the track

Sophie had enough of "cheesing". She wanted to look at the horses!

The paddock area

Love this of her with the twin spires in the background!

Andrew was too embarrassed to hold my hand!

I would have never thought this trip would have been such a hit, but all three kids loved it! I love these shots.
Of course, we bought the obligatory mint julep so Aunt Connie could have a Derby glass. Derby week is here, but the rain is also back. Let's hope it dries out in time for Kinderderby and the real deal on Saturday!
