Deam Lake

One of Tony's goals this summer was to try and visit a different park every weekend. While we didn't quite make it, we have gone to one a month. The boys have been clamoring to go to a beach for quite some time. Andrew has only been to the beach once in his life (Waikiki at eight months) and Aidan had never been. So today we surprised them with a trip to Deam Lake. It's not quite the ocean, but when you're five, all that matters is sand and water.Sophie didn't care for the water, but she liked the sand. What girl doesn't like to sunbathe with SPF 50?
When they were in water at their knees or above, the boys had to wear a life jacket (my rule). Aidan's life jacket left a mark - he looks like a smurf.
Sophie did like the sand toys, even if she couldn't figure out how to use them. She also liked that the sand helped her to sit up much more steadily.
Too much fresh air makes everybody tired. Time for a quick nap!
It wouldn't be a trip to the beach without a sand castle (of some sort).
After we'd played and eaten and played some more, we decided it would be fun to rent a rowboat. At $10 for an hour, it was a nice little treat and something we thought the boys would enjoy. This is the picture I took when I was actually in the boat:
About five minutes out into the lake, Sophie decided she was hot and absolutely hated the life jacket. It's difficult to balance in a row boat with a screaming, flailing infant, so I was dumped back on the shore and the boys took the boat out. Here is Sophie after she was liberated from the jacket:
Here are Tony and the boys enjoying some "guy" time:
I'm so glad that everyone seems to be feeling better! We ended up having a really great time, but I was reminded why I prefer the pool over the beach as I do laundry full of sand.
