I thought I took way more pictures than I apparently did, so this post is not as exciting as I planned. On Thursday evening, Tony and I went to "A Taste of Oaks", which is a fundraiser where lots of local restaurants, wineries, brewing companies and bourbon distilleries bring their goodies to taste. It's our second year at the event because Tony's work is a sponsor. We always have a great time.
Friday was a day off school in honor of the Oaks. The kids and I ran errands and went to the zoo while Tony was at the track all day. Aidan had a 6:00 ball game and we met Tony back at home at 8:00. We had tickets to the "Oaks and Smokes" event benefiting Kentucky Harvest. I showered and was ready to leave in 30 minutes - glad the ponytail look is "in". Sophie wasn't too thrilled that I stole one of her flower clips for my hair.
"Oaks and Smokes" is definitely my kind of event. The food was awesome, although I thought the drink prices were outrageous. Each ticket also comes with a cigar (hence "smokes"), so we enjoyed the nice weather in the garden area while Tony and his friends enjoyed their cigars. It was fun to see all the dresses and hats of the women who had come from the track. The entertainment at this event was "Here Come the Mummies". They're a group from Nashville (I think) and they were AMAZING! They dress like mummies because apparently some of them are quite well known and it would be a breech of contract for them to play with a group. They were tons of fun to listen to and watch.
On Derby Day, Sophie had dance class and we hit the grocery store to prepare for our "party". All of this wore Sophie out, because she crashed on the couch.
At race time, the kids and I invited Tony's mom, grandma, and our nephew over for an impromptu picnic. Of course, we had Derby Pie!
In spite of Tony being at the track, I also made myself a mint julep. They're not very tasty drinks, but it is the drink of the Derby, and the mint was fresh picked from my backyard.
The best part of the evening was that I picked the winning horse! Tony added my pick to his, which means we ended up winning more money than if he'd just placed the bet on my horse alone. That makes for a good Derby!
