Pinewood Derby

Today was the Pinewood Derby for the boy scouts. Since there is also a sibling racing division, Aidan was able to participate as well. Anyone who knows anything about boy scouts (which was not me, until today) can tell you that this event is kind of a big deal. There was a workshop several weeks ago where the boys cut the cars out of blocks of wood. Last night, we painted them.

Today, after church and basketball, we headed over to the big gym for the races. It's quite a set up, with a very technical track and software to track the winners. Each car raced in four heats, so they had a time from each of the four lanes. The lowest score was dropped and the other three were averaged. Here's Aidan ready to race:

Andrew did pretty well - he won two of his four heats.

I love this shot of Aidan and Hunter watching results in their basketball jerseys:

In the end, neither Andrew nor Aidan placed in their divisions. Andrew was fine with it, and had a great time anyway. Aidan was pretty disappointed, as you can tell from his face.

After the cub scouts all raced and awards were bestowed, the grown-ups had a turn. For all the men who can't give up scouting or (like Tony) never got the chance, there is a race just for you! Tony built his car strategically with weight in the back. I painted it for him last night in Notre Dame colors. He also won two of his four heats, but didn't place in the final.

After the Pinewood Derby, Andrew had a basketball game. We had a celebrity of sorts in our midst! Diggity Dave from MTV's Pimp My Ride was in town filming a commerical for a local car dealership. One of Andrew's classmates is in the commerical, and Diggity Dave came to watch him play. We snuck in a picture. Aidan didn't want to be in it, and Sophie was a little unnerved by Dave's hair. He was actually a really nice guy.

So, that's the end of another exciting weekend. Andrew starts baseball practice this week, so maybe spring is finally on the way. Only three weeks until spring break!
